Dear James, everybody needs to calm down.

its stupid to blame an author who has lied about his autobography. everybody lies. if people are stupid enough to believe what they read its their own fault. was the book a waste of time or fun reading? this is the question one shall ask .

I think you missed the point. That's fine that its a 'fun' read (even though is poorly written) but people used this as guidance or a reference of hope. Not just as entertainment. Obviously you haven't had any substance issues to deal with because this book was much more than a novel to most. That's why people are upset. You should probably go back to a Tom Clancy book.

OK, let's put this book and surrounding rhetoric in perspective, if your teenage son comes home from Prom night with your car (that you loaned him for the evening), and the vehicle is totaled; only his reason is that as he was leaving the Prom’s after party, a cat ran out in the middle of the road right in front of him, and was followed by a 9-year-old-girl crashing the runaway cat.

Being a careful and safety-conscience driver he slammed on the brakes, hit a patch of sand, spun out and wrapped the car around a telephone pole. Fortunately, the girl, the cat, and the other passengers in the car were OK.

Great Story, eh?

Only you later find out that your son forgot to mention that the accident actually happened after he and his six buddies, snorted several lines of coke, took some "X", and downed a bottle of Jack Daniels, then did hole shots on the front lawn of the High School and played chicken with some potheads in another car. Oh yea, there was no cat and there was no 9-year-old chasing it.

Is it still a good story, or did the kid lie to you, and thus deserve to be punished?

Interesting how “embellishing” a couple of details can change the entire story, eh?

Everybody lies is the same false assuption that gave James Frey the power to say that his FICTIONAL STORY was suddenly a memoir. Please speak for yourself, not everybody lies, some of us are good and do good not because we might get caught but because we know better.

Let's play a little game here. You are a parent. Your kid is on drugs. You hope to give them "a little inspiration" (as Ophra and others have claimed this book as done for many people.) You decide to give them this book. Do you care if it's lies or do you want it to be honest? .. We're not talking about just "a fun read" here. .. Do you think that you might have opted for a "real" story if you had know about this author's "reality issues"?

"Everybody Lies"
wow, is that your excuse?
Guess what, everybody doesn't think lying is ok. Geez, what are you anyway, a politician?
